“To Gather”
The word conjures coffee shops, church basements, living rooms, ball fields, concert halls…. especially at this time of year. As the air chills and we seek comfort in a hearth, home cooking, family and friends… We celebrate, laugh, sing, turn to each other and count our blessings. So please join us at the Reif with humorist Kevin Kling, and the musical brilliance of Dan Chouinard and Simone Perrin as we raise the roof with stories and songs.
Dan Chouinard, For nearly four decades, has been pianist and accordionist of choice for performers in the Twin Cities area, an enabler of community singalongs and a writer of hit shows for public radio, concert hall and theater. His most recent theatrical collaboration, Rondo ’56: Remembering St. Paul’s Black Main Street, has played to sold-out houses since its premiere in 2021.
Dan attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and taught French and Italian at the University of Minnesota for four years. Beginning in 1994, his radio series The Singer’s Voice was broadcast live from the Dakota Jazz Club every week over six years.
He was a regular guest accompanist on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and is the founder of a classic country band, Lush Country, comprised of Prairie Home Companion alumni. He currently accompanies Garrison Keillor on concerts around the U.S.
Kevin Kling, a renowned playwright and storyteller, is known for his commentaries on NPR’s All Things Considered and TPT’s Almanac. He entertains audiences with off-kilter stories full of humor, heart, and thoughtful philosophizing. Following a life-changing accident in 2001, Kevin continues to write plays and stories in a rigorous fashion, traveling the globe to theaters, storytelling festivals and residencies. He frequently performs at the acclaimed National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. A prominent disability advocate, Kevin is especially proud of his collaboration with Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, a company of artists with varying abilities.
“Part funny guy, part poet and playwright, part wise man.” Krista Tippett, “On Being”, American Public Media.
Simone Perrin grew up on the banks of the upper Mississippi in beautiful Winona, MN. After studying at Oberlin College and Conservatory and then living and working in New York City, and then Minneapolis, where she met and started working with Kevin Kling, Simone moved rural Wisconsin, where she lives today with her family. She has appeared on the Prairie Home Companion and has performed with many regional theaters including The Guthrie, Theater Latte Da, Open Eye Figure Theatre, The Cincinnati Playhouse and The Seattle Repertory Theater, where she and Kevin developed two original plays, How? How? Why? Why? Why? and Breakin’ Hearts and Takin’ Names. In 2009, Simone released her first album Hummingbird, available to listen on most streaming platforms.

Originally hailing from Las Cruces, New Mexico, four-time Texas Female Vocalist of the Year Bri Bagwell fell in love with music at an early age. When she turned 18, she uprooted herself and moved to Austin, where she quickly learned the art of live performance in many of the city’s clubs, winning over one live audience at a time. After graduating from the University of Texas, she released her debut record Banned from Santa Fe in 2011. In 2013 she released an EP of demos that she recorded during her time in Nashville and followed up with 2015’s full-length record When a Heart Breaks. In 2018, she stunned us again with the release of In My Defense, a collection of ten carefully crafted songs that give her fans an inside peek of how this girl chasing a dream for over fifteen years, has blossomed into the woman living those dreams. Her albums impressively showcase her songwriting talents, but more impressive is her grueling tour schedule boasting over 150 shows per year.

Hailing from Kennett, Missouri, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. The GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/songwriter’s early releases, I’m About To Come Alive, The Sound Of A Million Dreams, I’m A Fire and Fighter, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known, MCA Nashville, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. Through dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be,” Nail began making his most “organic” work to date, David Nail & The Well Ravens, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh, Mother, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. 2024 brought more touring than ever, two great single releases “If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. Nail plans on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album project this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own words, “My philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.” Find more at www.davidnail.com.

Douglas Taurel’s The American Soldier is a play based on letters from veterans and their families that span from the Revolution to recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The script has been created through a combination of exhaustive research, wording from actual letters sent from soldiers to their loved ones, and verbatim language lifted from interviews conducted with veterans and their family members.
“The American Soldier is a beautiful, truthful, important one-man show that celebrates Americans of every class, ethnicity and race. It unites us around a core notion of sacrifice no matter how any of us might feel about the political purposes behind the wars they were asked to wage for all the rest of us.”
— Craig Lucas (Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award® nominee for The Light in the Piazza, Prelude to a Kiss)

Dave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band, Trampled By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter, a bull-bodied, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. He now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name called Red Tail. While Dead Man Winter’s Furnace was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time, he is not connecting these songs on Red Tail to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. The conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota, where he’s from. Drawing from the outdoors, Simonett uses light, weather and imagery to paint introspective, cinematic scenes that are easy to lose yourself in.

Join Dorothy and her loyal companion Toto as they “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” through the Land of Oz, determined to reach the Emerald City, where the great and powerful Wizard of Oz will help them get home. Of course, along the way, Dorothy encounters witches (both good and bad), Munchkins, talking trees and winged monkeys. But most importantly, she befriends three unique characters: a Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man with no heart, and a Lion with no nerve. Their journey to happiness – and self-awareness – is a glowing testament to friendship, understanding and hope in a world filled with both beauty and ugliness.
The Wizard of Oz Youth Edition is presented through special arrangement with and all materials are provided by Concord Theatricals

John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band (J2B2) is an all-star bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band’s live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing – John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Fain on bass; and Patrick Sauber on acoustic guitar and vocals. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmonic vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock) and seasoned showmanship. This is the “high lonesome sound” of American roots music at its finest.
“John Jorgenson is one of my most favorite players. He is incredibly versatile and his solos are unique and melodic, played with amazing technique. ‘My guitarist’s guitarist.”
–Peter Frampton
