Summary
The Patron Services Assistant at the Reif Performing Arts Center is the vibrant face of our front-of-house experience. This role is essential in creating memorable and welcoming experiences for our patrons. Responsibilities include managing the Lakewood Cafe, assisting with the McMahon Box Office, and ensuring the smooth operation of performances. The Patron Services Assistant is always ready to enhance the patron experience.
Requirements
With a friendly demeanor and a passion for the arts, the Patron Services Assistant must be able to clearly articulate the Reif’s goals, mission, and policies. Flexible hours, nights and weekends will be required. Deal efficiently with seating requirements and work effectively under pressure.
Working Hours
This is a part-time position with 10 to 30 hours per week mainly during Box Office Hours and Show Hours. Flexible hours include daytime, evenings, and weekends.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patron Services:
- Become familiar with the Reif’s ticketing system.
- Assist patrons with inquiries prior to performances via phone and email.
- Sell tickets at the door to patrons.
- Strive to develop excellent relationships with patrons, enhancing their overall experience.
- Perform other event-related duties as assigned.
Lakewood Cafe:
- Operate coffee and snack equipment according to guidance.
- Uphold cleanliness standards and ensure proper sanitation of cafe spaces, equipment, and tools.
- Manage cash and opening/closing cashbox checklist.
- Support the daily completion of food safety checklists and maintain food safety compliance.
- Follow procedures to ensure that the environment is clean, safe, and welcoming for both coworkers and patrons.
- Assist with the maintenance and inventory of cafe supplies.
General:
- Work efficiently and attend to patrons with minimal supervision.
- Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate teamwork.
- Be available for all shows at the Reif Performing Arts Center.
- Be punctual and reliable.
- Work with volunteers, ensuring they have a positive and fulfilling experience.
- Assist the Patron Services Manager or other staff members as needed.
- Perform end-of-show cash reconciliation from the Box Office and Lakewood Cafe as assigned.
- Complete all opening and closing duties of the theater during events as per leadership expectations.
- Learn Front of House emergency response plans to include first aid and CPR.
- Create and support a positive, professional, team-oriented, harassment-free work environment by understanding and complying with the company’s policies.
Requirements:
- A passion for the performing arts and creating memorable experiences for patrons.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact warmly and effectively with patrons, volunteers, and staff.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with digital sales systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a customer service role.
- Familiarity with ticketing systems and event management.
- Previous experience in a theater or arts environment.
Compensation
The starting rate for this part-time position is $14.00 per hour. Part Time Scene Shop Crew, Set Construction, Maintenance – Maintain & Supervise use of the scene shop. Primary Set Construction for Reif Dance and Theater Ed Programs (possibility of cross over with the High School Drama Program and Grand Rapids Players). Minor building maintenance and other duties as assigned. Construction or Maintenance experience preferred.
Reports to: Technical Director
Hourly Position: $16.00 per hour, variable hours of 10-40 a week
Examples of Duties:
- Constructs scenery, understands drawings and elevations, cut lists, construction methods (e.g. hand tools, power tools, adhesives, foam, plastic, etc.)
- Maintains a safe, healthy, and clean workshop environment
- Takes an active role in load-in, tech, and strike of all productions
- Maintains tools, equipment, and materials inventory
- Performs other related work as required and requested
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge, or ability to learn, all aspects of the theater process – production and technical as well as performance
- Excellent communication skills – written, oral, visual
- Ability to work productively under deadlines
- Use power and hand tools accurately and effectively
- Possession of a valid driver’s license by time of employment
Work Conditions:
- Ability to work long hours and work with a flexible schedule
- May have to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust
- Must be willing to travel and work at various sites, as needed
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions while using the appropriate safety procedures
- Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous electrical equipment, fumes, and/or materials
Physical Demands:
This position will require the ability to move/carry theatrical scenery (up to 50lbs) onto and off trucks and throughout the facility, as needed.

Part Time Show Crew – Load in/Load out and Show Crew for various productions at the Reif Center, IRA Hockey Pavilion and Grand Jam and Riverfest Festivals in downtown Grand Rapids. No experience necessary, just the ability to listen and follow directions. Variable hours of 5-12 hours per show. Perhaps 6-8 shows per season. Ideal for those that work for themselves or have variable working hours in their primary job.
