It was roughly a decade ago that Pert Near Sandstone first gathered around a microphone in a Minneapolis basement to record their debut album, Up And Down The River. So much has happened since then: highs and lows, personal struggles and artistic triumphs, new faces and new sounds. The winding road they’ve traveled over the years makes it all the more meaningful for the band to come full circle on their dazzling new release, Discovery Of Honey, which finds them once again recording in a basement and reuniting with founding member Ryan Young, who’s spent the past seven years touring the world playing fiddle with bluegrass stars Trampled By Turtles.

A native of the northern Minnesota logging town of Bemidji, Brian Miller teams up with Wisconsinite Randy Gosa to perform the Irish-influenced music of men who roamed the Great Lakes region in the days when pine was king. Miller and Gosa are both renowned in the Irish traditional music world for their work with top artists (including Bua and Myserk) in the US and Ireland. As a duo, they mix a passion for Northwoods history and folklore with their finely honed approach to song-arrangement to bring this rich but under-explored music to life.

THE LEGEND OF THE ACTUAL WOLF: There are outlaws, and there are outlaws. Some practice the pose and cultivate the image, though seldom dirty their soft, bourgeois hands with anything actually outside the law. When they do, it is often despicable, irresponsible or just plain mundane. The Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard), however, is a real outlaw and has pled guilty to it. Between the bust and before the trial AW recorded a pair of EPs, each showing ‘another side of the Wolf’. It is one of the most obvious statements of existence: everything takes time, and the truly good, well crafted things in life take more than the rest. If the world has had to wait a while for another full-length release from Actual Wolf, it is only due to craft and cure.

Acting Black
Demystifying Racism
Preregistration required: alicem@kootasca.org or call 218-999-5883
Part spoken word, part stand-up comedy, part TED Talk, Acting Black is a critically acclaimed 60-minute solo show created to inspire open and honest conversations about race and diversity.
Using the power of art to investigate difficult concepts Acting Black takes us to the roots of American racism and its consequences for all of us by exploring the evolution of the Black stereotype, tracing the birth of its beginning from a single individual on a specific night in Louisville, Kentucky in 1828 to the racial conflicts we still endure to this day.
Writer/performer Carlyle Brown is a playwright-artist-thinker whose body of work through the years continues to bring fresh and riveting insights into the experience of race in America. Carlyle guides audience discussion following this powerful theatrical solo performance where he encourages personal and actionable solutions.
“Acting Black investigates the social construct of race and provides a way to talk about issues in a context in which it is safe to be uncomfortable. This experience is not about guilt but about understanding.” -Audience Member
“Acting Black is not really a play. The prolific Brown has written and performed in plays for one actor, in which he takes on characters and puts himself in a narrative context. Not this time. In the first half of Acting Black, Brown appears as a lecturer, using a PowerPoint presentation to explain the notion of “acting black,” its origins, as framed by the entertainment industry, and the scars it has caused and continues to inflect on American society. His lecture is performed without notes, very polished, laced with humor, anecdotes and descriptive imagery, but the man on stage is not playing a character—he is quite himself, speaking directly to us, the audience.” -Arthur Dorman, Talkin’ Broadway
Based in Minnesota, but with roots in Tennessee, Chastity grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the full gospel church of her childhood, she played saxophone and drums and found her singing voice and a passion for music. Her first show was in Knoxville, TN, and then it was on to Minneapolis. Since then, she’s been featured on NPR’s “Favorite Sessions,” CMT, American Songwriter, the London Times, Paste Magazine and others.

The Grand Rapids Players invites you to Deathtrap, directed by Steve Jaeger, Oct. 11-20 at the Reif Center. Two acts, one set, five characters– a sharp thriller spun as a play-within-a-play, Ira Levin’s hit Deathtrap will surprise even the sharpest connoisseurs of murder mysteries. Written by Ira Levin in 1978, this 2-act play is known as one of the biggest hits on Broadway, running for four years with almost 1800 performances.
Playwright Sidney Bruhl (John Peterson), once one of the brightest lights on Broadway has spent the past decade in the grip of the world’s worst case of writer’s block, and finds himself in the depths of despair — until he receives a package from his former student Clifford Anderson (Nate Pace). Inside is an unproduced script that’s better than anything Sidney has written in years. At the urging of his wife, Myra (Susie Mogan), Sidney undertakes a plan to lure Clifford to his country home and, through fair means or foul make that script his own. But shortly after Clifford arrives, it’s clear that things are not what they seem. Even Helga Ten Dorp (Marina Whight), the eccentric psychic/author from next door, and Porter Milgram(Greg Tuttle), Sidney’s observant attorney, can only speculate where the line between truth and deception lies.
Deathtrap was a 4-time Tony Award nominee for Best Play, Featured Actor, Featured Actress, and Best Director. With Deathtrap, playwright Levin received his second Edgar Award, for Best Play, as well.
Deathtrap is presented with special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. NY.
Full intensity living without a second to waste or take for granted — that is Mary Bue’s m.o. After moving to Minneapolis in 2016, she has found herself with a new band of her dreams and a new album in the works to share her high intensity life philosophy in its title track The World is Your Lover.
A prolific songwriter with 7 albums under her belt, Mary’s music touches upon archetypal themes of the human condition: love, loss, triumph, dreams, and the natural world. A longtime student of yoga and psychology since her early teens, Mary weaves sacred subject matter into her songs with inquiries into the spirit, the seeking of deeper levels of consciousness, and deep concern for the environment all mixed into her sometimes crass, real-world hue. For the early half of 2017 Mary was an Artist in Residence at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM – spending time creating in solitude, along the Rio Grande river gorge and Sangre de Cristo mountains. She released her 7th project The Majesty of Beasts in May 2017 which landed on 2017’s Best of Minnesota Music lists for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and #3 in the City Pages. Mary’s long-time support of PAVSA (Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault) as well as the release of this EP was also recognized, honoring Mary with 2017 Community Ally of the Year.

This 100 minute documentary, “The Conscientious Objector” is the story through the eyes of the men who witnessed this man’s heroic acts and actual interviews of the humble hero, himself, Desmond Doss who was most recently portrayed in the Hollywood film story “Hacksaw Ridge”. This powerful, evocative and informational story will be shown at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 1 in the Ives Studio at the Reif Center free of charge to all. Desmond, like a lot of young men and women who serve, came home with what we now know as PTSD [Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder]. Back then, it was called “shellshock.” There’s no question that Desmond suffered from it. He dealt with PTSD partly by talking about it, which is effective. Desmond Doss, a US Army medic was the only WWII soldier to receive the Medal of Honor as a conscientious objector. All are welcome. This film is sponsored by the Blackberry Seventh-day Adventist church.

Nadia Boulanger was a French musician who had a list of students that reads like a “who’s who” of twentieth century composers: Philip Glass, Aaron Copland, Astor Piazzolla, Michel Legrand, Gian Carlo Menotti, Walter Piston, Jean Françaix, and the list goes on and on. She’s been called “the most influential teacher since Socrates.” Writer/Creator Mina Fisher tells Nadia’s story through words and music performed by Michael Kim, pianist, Stephanie Arado, violin, and soprano Adriana Zabala as Nadia.

Lillian Carter was much more than President Jimmy Carter’s mother – she was a social activist, great humanitarian, nurse, peanut farmer, and nurturer. She celebrated her 70th Birthday in India while serving in the Peace Corps. She was astonishing in her ordinariness: she loved to fish and disliked cooking. But to describe her as “ordinary” is so far off the mark, as her President-son called her “Remarkable.” This play introduces us to this woman who refused to bow to the attitudes of her Southern surroundings, a free-thinker who enjoyed professional wrestling, who nurtured the best human qualities in all with whom she interacted. Mis Lillian loved her soap opera and a glass of good bourbon – often at the same time! Audiences internationally have appreciated meeting this “belle,” warts and all. There is no effort, no need, to present her as an angel. Her life is inspiring, funny, ever-changing, and, as is true of most people sometimes tragic. She was an “original.” No one who met her ever forgot her. Once you see her story come to life, you won’t forget her either.

Reif Dance Company is made up of the most dedicated and talented dancers who commit to extra rehearsal time for a place in the company, or for younger students, the Jr. Company. The Company Show brings together original, classical, contemporary, and modern dance, presenting works by professional choreographers as well as student choreography. It also features solos from our senior students who have been with us many years and are going off to college next year. This year we will have choreography by our faculty members Deirdre Murnane (Reif Dance Director), Julia Sutton, Christina Anderson, Katie E. Smith, and Da’Rius Malone from James Sewell Ballet, as well as many of the dancers themselves. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to branch out and have the opportunity to work with each other as choreographers as well as dancers. This is a skill that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, regardless of their career choice.

Featuring a Q&A with Benny the Cabdriver, Mel Johnson Jr.
Johnson will be performing a one-person production called Frederick Douglass: In the Shadow of Slavery at the Reif on Friday, April 16.
Mel Johnson Jr.
MEL JOHNSON JR. - Actor | Director | Producer - Though easily recognizable from his TOTAL RECALL co-starring role opposite ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Mel is equally comfortable these days discussing the production of his new one man show "Frederick Douglass In The Shadow Of Slavery" which recently had its extremely successful world premiere in California at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, and he is discussing his work with such companies as Goldman Sachs, American Express and Credit Suisse as a corporate councilor.
While living in Los Angeles, Mel was the Executive Producer of Shadow Entertainment's Urban Horror label "Big City Pictures," he produced four feature films "Ragdoll," "The Horrible Dr. Bones," "Killjoy" and "The Vault" - All of which can be found on video. Mel was also the Artistic Director of The Imagination Workshop, a group of actors, writers, and directors who work within the psychiatric community and with kids at risk. He's extremely proud of the fact that during his tenure as Artistic Director, The Imagination workshop won the first Ovation Award given to a company for "Outstanding Community Outreach."
Mel has countless credits from a resume that reflects his work on stage, screen and television. As a theater director, his work is best embodied by the award-winning "Give'em Hell Harry" starring JASON ALEXANDER, "Oscar To Oscar," "The Me Nobody Knows," "The Ballad of Lizard Gulch" and the critically acclaimed "The Last White Man in the World." Most recently, he directed the World Premiere of Tom Dugan's one man show "Robert E Lee, Shades of Gray" at the Carpenter Center in Richmond, Virginia.
When his acting career is mentioned, Mel finds it difficult to point to his most significant work, but can quickly identify the roles that gave him the most pleasure. In addition to his film work, the list includes Broadway stints in "On The Twentieth Century," "Eubie!" with Maurice and Gregory Hines, "The Rink" with Liza Minnelli, and Chita Rivera. Bob Fosse's "Big Deal," Mufasa in "The Lion King" and most recently starring in the new Earth, Wind and Fire musical, "Hot Feet!" Mel would be remiss if he didn't mention his long-standing relationship with The New York Shakespeare Festival, where he most recently starred in the revival of the musical "Two Gentleman Of Verona" for the festival's, Shakespeare In The Park. On television, he was a regular on David Lynch's "On The Air" and guest starred on numerous other T.V. shows from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" to "The Pratice."
Mel has always found it extremely rewarding sharing with others what he has learned from his education, at the High School of Performing Arts and Hofstra University and his vast life experience. He has taught classes in both New York and Los Angeles, coached individually and spoken with numerous schools, colleges and community organizations around the country. MEL JOHNSON JR. is as excited about his future as he is proud of his past accomplishments.

Now, with the release of her new recording Testify (2021) she solidifies her position as a top-tier singer, songwriter and producer who has found her musical home, performing her own unique blend of blues, country, rock and soul. La Montana
On a mountain in Colombia, paramilitary forces have Marxist rebels cornered against a high ridge without food. In search of a way out, the guerrillas ask an old friend (a missionary they had held hostage and released some 20 years ago) for the number of a humanitarian priest in hopes of finding someone to bring food to the mountain. The missionary mistakes the priests' name for the head paramilitary leader and inadvertently gives the guerrilla commanders the wrong number. Through a humorous confusion two sworn enemies end up face to face in an emotional encounter that unveils the very core of Colombia's conflict and the journey each one must take to finally find peace in a lifetime of war.

Stiff competition from nearby Medieval World threatens to drive the annual Renaissance Faire out of business. Attendance is plunging, especially at the traditional Shakespeare production. Who wants to spend three hours on a wooden bench watching a play they don’t understand? To survive, the faire needs a new vibe that appeals to younger audiences. Enter a new director and her plan to stage a program called ”Great Death Scenes from Shakespeare.” It seems like a killer idea until the famous Shakespearean actor playing Romeo goes missing, and he is replaced by a brash, young actor of questionable talent. As a major storm approaches, the missing actor is found murdered most foul. Someone, it seems, believes the pen is not as mighty as the sword.
